A DAY IN OUR LIVES
by Albert Russo
Children playing in the courtyard
little Steven throws a ball at Laura
she gets it on the face and yells
the boy is scared and runs away
her friend takes her in her arms
then wipes the blood from her nose
the dog lies on the porch, it is resting
the family cat comes and licks its muzzle
the dog groans contentedly but doesn’t move
in the livingroom a parrot shrieks
“what’s all the schmoozing about?”
a lonely ant scampers along a crack in the floor
a man’s shoe tries to crush it
but doesn’t succeed
spiteful, he says: “there are billions of them
and I couldn’t get this one.”
the ant retorts: “like you I’m an individual,
so, respect my life, as I respect yours”
far, far away, thousands of miles from here
a suicide bomber destroys the lives of 110 people
yet, in her dream, she was sure it happened right next door
the moment she wakes up, the TV is on,
showing her the disastrous effect of that attack
whether you want it or not, you’re always in harm’s way
a bird chirps merrily behind the rosebush
as if this planet resembled the paradise
Adam could admire on the sixth day of God’s Creation
