are you a poet?

by Mark Olynyk

2.
are you a poet?
do you act
without rhyme or reason
have an itch to scratch
speak your mind
clang the bell
walk in circles
lose yourself
in the subject matter
hear both sides of a story
prefer solitude
to the company of strangers
find yourself
missing in action
all doom and gloom
hollow at the core?

poets must:
be autocrats of culture
conjure figments
of imagination
fill emptiness with words
exhume the truth
abandon logic
avoid the commonplace
be nonplussed
by the extraordinary
go into a trance
channel spirits
live in both worlds
make a superhuman effort
dream in colour
