Dreams in the Sky

My dreams float upward toward the stars.
I wish they could stay there after I'm gone
Hovering gently above the lights.
My dreams in the sky
Outside of my mind.

Through a haze I see myself
So young and alert in the midday sun.
Shy little boy digging in dirt.
Mind ablaze with wondering eyes.

A web sways softly in the breeze
while ghosts caress the banana tree leaves.
Mom watches from the kitchen window.
Dog by my side in the tender noon light.

Oh memory!
Beautiful, youthful memory!
Don't fade so deep in my aging mind.
When I die you'll be lost forever.

If only you could float up toward the stars
and stay there long after I'm gone
Hovering gently above the city.
My dreams in the sky
Outside of my mind.

Sweet Lady
I see you emerging from shadows
Bathed within an angelic light.
I loved you once long ago
and still bear scars from your sad farewell.

You've come home again after so many years.
The two of us here on this shimmering night.
Our limbs entwined in loving embrace.
Our bodies the same as when we were young.

Dream!
Oh beautiful dream!
For a moment my heart beats again.
Soon you'll fade from my aging mind.
Lost in corridors of withered time.

If only you could float up toward the stars
and stay there long after I'm gone
Hovering gently above the horizon.
My dreams in the sky
Outside of my mind.

I feel a presence here beside me
As I wander through the woods.
Its form appears in subtle light
An older man with tender smile.

It's you, Dad.
You've come to visit
My guide amidst these endless trees.
It warms my heart to know you're here
Your thoughts still conscious in the air.

He takes my hand and walks with me.
A father and his youngest son.
Deep down I know it's just a dream.
And I'm here all alone.

Oh memories!
My fading dreams and memories!
The years now pass with greater force.

I see myself:
The first time I heard the Liebestod.

I see myself:
On a mountain above the sea.

One thought bleeds into another
Drifting deeper beyond reach.

Oh my fading dreams!
I can't bear to lose you all!

If only you could float up toward the stars
and stay there long after I'm gone
Hovering gently above the earth.
My dreams in the sky
Outside of my mind.
