Song of Woes

by vivekanand Jha

What song should I sing?
Where innocent bleeds
Brutal leads.

Where fools sworn in
To wear crown
But scholars mourn.

Where wife an active orator
Husband passive listener.

Where vermillion stigma
Only save Brahma.

Where earning on descendant
Yearning on ascendant.

Where idles are adorned
Idols are scorned.

Where puberty blooms
Poverty plays dooms.

Where sown seeds
Reaped weeds.
Where parents cultivate
Sons annihilate.

Where one replete
Other depletes.

Where to fly no fuel
But indulgence in deadly duel.

Where nose burns in slum
But to drink needs rum.

Where no hands to bangle widow’s wrist
But to fondle brazen breast.
