Refugees

Windshields eating sunset glint by glint,

rear-view mirrors
catching unsigned treaties,

the prescribed havoc

of rush hour
hissing over the freeway bridge

as women in saris
gather along the jetty and talk

in low tones, watching their men fish,

wishes waiting for a falling star.
