The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz
(with apologies to L. Frank Baum)

Amid the great towers that gleam in the sun
And their canyons of steel and of stone,
I set out to search for a heart that never would break,
A heart I could keep for my own.

By a bridge and the river with the wind in my face,
I looked for eyes that could see
That I needed a heart that never would break
And someone to tend it for me.

In late afternoon with clouds coming in,
The shadows reach out from the shore
And I look for a smile I van keep for awhile,
One I thought I had found once before.

Evening comes down and the towers are aglow
With thousands of lights on the dark.
If I found a heart that never would break,
What a blaze would leap from that spark.

Morning will come and in the rush of the throng,
My search will go on as it must -
To find a heart that heart that never will break,
A heart I surely can trust.

We'll meet then some day on that great crowded way
And without a word being spoken,
I'll know at a glance , when I see your eyes dance ,
I've found a hear that has never been broken.
