I Remember Us

When I remember you
I remember us
I remember the boys like twin souls
Rugged like stones
Always walking on hanging soles
Skinny to the bones
The boys who only longed for a spree
For a moment to be free
The moment to get out of their minds
To taste fear and guts
Feel how they feel
And tell which to choose
Guts felt good
So we dared, faced the odds
But fear, was better
Never felt good though
But we learnt through the guts
That it was always wise to dash for cover

I remember the boys every place noted
Stepped every spot bare-footed
Chasing the beetles, bare-chested
Terrorizing the lizards, cold-hearted
How they held tight in their grips
Never letting go their loose parched khaki shorts
I remember their usual fights
Their make ups obvious but strange
Only boys just being boys
Boys just being friends
Strengthening man’s relationship with man
I can still hear their voices
Remember vividly their faces
I knew them, each person by his name
Because one was me, and the other you Edem
When I remember you
I remember us
And I remember the boys
