The Big Black Cat

Bigotry's a big black cat
balanced on your knees
purring as you stroke its back
and sharing the TV.

Everybody has a cat;
there's no one who's not felt
the purr of satisfaction when
some talkback smooths the pelt.

I even have some cats myself
despite my best exertions:
market theorists and graffitists
are two much-stroked aversions.

Rural racists serve their turn,
the way their minds close down.
They have their own black cats to pat
and take them into town.

To say that Aborigines
deserve some sort of go
is always very like to set them
purring all they know:

They alla packa drunx OK?
And bludgers too as well
And anywun who don't agree
Can damnwell go to hell.

The cats all through the country now
are purring on our knees.
The volume's going up each day
like chainsaws in the trees.

I like to stroke mine fairly quietly,
my furry big black cat.
The pleasures of a prejudice ...
ah! there's nothing quite like that.
