Grubstake

Grubstake

A fifth of whiskey
and a pack of smokes:

for fifty
cents, I'll trade you both.

One quarter for a song
and one for the paper.

He chewed his tongue
and seemed to savor

the oaken scent
of the golden liquor

and the change spent.

A flicker
of acknowledgement -

We've all been there.
