De Profundis

by Kenneth Walter Simpson

Icons moulded from common clay
preach sermons
to congregations every Sunday
served by courtiers
who decomposed years ago.

New ideas desecrate devoted minds
defrosting inside deciduous heads
sprouting floral tributes
to the dead.

Despots survive
as children with enormous eyes
die while wondering why.
