The Gates of Paradise

Who'd not hesitate before these gilded doors
that Michelangelo, amazed, once described
as gates to grace, the entrance to Paradise?

So much we lack, but mere intimate silence
lies within the coolest shade, the font, the tomb,
and signs, on the marble, of the zodiac.

Besides, sunstruck, the animate street's outside;
so turn these great shut doors around, front to back
that their name, one perfect day, be accurate.
