About Dannie Abse
Dannie Abse, (born September 22, 1923 in Cardiff and died September 28, 2014), was a Welsh poet. He published his first volume of poetry, “After Every Green Thing” in 1948. He lived in London, but spends long periods in South Wales. He was President of the Poetry Society of the United Kingdom. Abse was very active as a judge of competitions for the Society of Authors. He was the author of novels, a dozen volumes of poetry, and several collections of journalistic writing. He also edited the Twentieth Century Anglo-Welsh Poetry and, with his wife Joan, the art and poetry anthology “Voices from the Gallery” for the Tate Gallery. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Wales and the University of Glamorgan. His novel Ash on a Young Man's Sleeve, (1954), recounts the experiences of a young Jewish man growing up in Cardiff as fascism threatens Europe. It is a widely known book in Britain: since its publication in 1954, it has continued to be reprinted.Dannie Abse is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). He was awarded the Wales Book of the Year in 2008 for The Presence.
