About Alice In Chains
Alice in Chains (AIC) is an American alternative metal band from Seattle, Washington. Formed in 1987 by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell and vocalist Layne Staley, they are one of the most notorious grunge bands, part of Seattle's Big Four alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Their musical style includes dark and heavy rhythms, but is very melodic and also characterized by a variety of sounds, which makes it difficult to accurately classify the band. The band is generally categorized as grunge, but draws inspiration from 1970s heavy metal containing elements from the heavy riffs of Black Sabbath and elements of melodic hard rock close to the musical style of Led Zeppelin, interwoven with softer and cleaner compositions in an acoustic style. Harmonized vocal lines are another distinct trait of the band. The band achieved international fame with the album Dirt, and the album's first promotional single, Would?, became one of the most popular rock albums of the 1990s. The band has sold over 25 million albums worldwide, including 14 million in the United States. Following their release, the albums Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains reached number one on the US charts. Jar of Flies was their first EP to reach number one. The band has also been nominated for nine Grammy Awards.
