Robert Nesta Marley, known as Bob Marley, born February 6, 1945, in Nine Miles, Jamaica, and died at the age of 36 on May 11, 1981, in Miami, United States, from cancer (melanoma), was a Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He achieved worldwide success during his lifetime and remains the most famous reggae musician, while also being considered the man who brought Jamaican music and the Rastafarian movement to a global audience. He sold over 200 million records worldwide.Bob Marley began his musical career in 1962. In 1963, he formed a vocal trio, The Wailing Wailers, with Bunny "Wailer" Livingston and Peter Tosh. With Simmer Down, in 1964, which called for an end to ghetto strife and unity against poverty, The Wailers achieved their first real local success in Jamaica. Many more followed until 1968. Meanwhile, Bob Marley had become a Rastafarian in 1966, under the influence of important figures (such as Mortimer Planno) in the Rastafarian movement, then in full swing in Jamaica.
