About Carpenters
The Carpenters were an American musical group of the 1970s and 1980s, whose central element was the duo formed by Karen Carpenter (1950–1983) and her brother Richard (1946–). Originally from Connecticut, having moved to Los Angeles with their parents, who wanted to foster their son's musical career, the duo recorded eleven albums over a fourteen-year career (1969–1983) and had 12 songs in the top 10 of the US charts, including three number ones and five number twos, making them among the best-selling records of all time. The group received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1971. The group's success was based on Karen's vocal qualities: a warm, pure voice with beautiful long notes. The group ceased to exist in 1983 with the death of Karen Carpenter from heart problems related to anorexia.
