About David Bowie
David Robert Jones, known as David Bowie, born January 8, 1947 in London and died January 10, 2016 in Manhattan, was a British singer-songwriter, musician, actor, and painter. After beginning his career in folk and pop music in the second half of the 1960s and a detour into mime, Bowie first gained public recognition with the song Space Oddity (1969), in which he introduced the character of Major Tom, an alter ego that would recur regularly throughout his career. He then rose to prominence as the flamboyant Ziggy Stardust, who became one of the leading figures of the glam rock movement with the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), on which he was supported by guitarist Mick Ronson. Bowie then became interested in black music (R'n'B, soul and funk) and moved to the United States, achieving his first number 1 with the song Fame from the album Young Americans (1975) and creating a new, much darker alter ego in the person of the Thin White Duke, which led to the release of Station to Station (1976). He then moved to West Berlin with Iggy Pop to pursue electronic music alongside Brian Eno.
