Dolly Rebecca Parton, born January 19, 1946, in Sevierville, Tennessee, is an American country and pop singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actress, screenwriter, philanthropist, businesswoman, and producer. After an uninterrupted career spanning more than half a century, she has become, among other things, the Queen of Country Music. She has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. She has reached number one on the US pop charts three times and the country charts 24 times. To date, Dolly Parton has written over 3,000 songs and produced over 65 albums.Since 1990, she has also been involved with a non-profit organization, Imagination Library, which aims to provide free books each month to children in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. She is one of the select few artists to have been nominated for the four most prestigious awards in the American entertainment industry: the Emmy Awards (television), the Grammy Awards (music), the Oscars (film), and the Tony Awards (theater). More generally, she is one of the most beloved public figures in the United States, uniting Democrats and Republicans alike.
