About Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia, and June 15, 1996, in Beverly Hills, a neighborhood of Los Angeles) was an American jazz singer. She was considered, along with Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday, to be one of the most important and celebrated singers in the history of jazz. With a three-octave range, she was notable for the purity of her voice and her improvisational ability, particularly in scat. She inherited the title of Jazz Royalty, The First Lady of Song (literally The First Lady of Song, but often translated as The Grande Dame of Jazz), after the heyday of swing music. She recorded 70 albums, selling approximately 40 million copies over a nearly 60-year career, and won 14 Grammy Awards, including the Grammy for Lifetime Achievement.
