Prince, real name Prince Rogers Nelson (born June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis and died April 21, 2016 in Chanhassen, Minnesota), was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, dancer, and actor. During his career, he explored a wide variety of musical styles, from pop to funk, including soul, rock, and R&B. Prince's career began in 1978 and his discography includes more than thirty studio albums released in just under forty years. He has also written songs and produced albums for other artists, including the Bangles, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Madonna, Sheila E., Mavis Staples, and The Time. A multi-instrumentalist – he plays around twenty instruments, excelling in particular on the guitar, bass, piano, drums and keyboards – Prince has forged an aura of ambitious, eclectic creator, and an unparalleled stage reputation by dancing and playing solos. He is also known for his sexually explicit references in some of his songs and for his use of eccentric costumes in concert.His fame spanned primarily from 1982 to 1994, from the album 1999 to the song The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. Prince experienced a resurgence in popularity beginning in 2004, the year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the publication of the collection Musicology, which sold two million copies in the United States. His performance of Purple Rain during the pouring rain at Super Bowl XLI on February 4, 2007, in Miami, is generally considered one of the highlights of these traditional annual musical performances, given on the center field in front of tens of thousands of spectators and millions of television viewers.
Prince has sold approximately 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. The artist died on April 21, 2016 in Chanhassen, in an elevator of his Paisley Park complex, victim at the age of 57 of an overdose of painkillers.
