Slick Rick, born Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters on January 14, 1965, in London, United Kingdom, is an English rapper and music producer. He is also known by the stage names Rick the Ruler, MC Ricky D, and Ricky Dee. He launched his career in the hip-hop genre in late 1983, during which time he recorded several songs such as La Di Da Di and Children's Story. He is best known for his narrative-style rapping, which earned him the nickname “the best storyteller in hip-hop.”Slick Rick rose to popularity during the golden age of hip-hop. His songs were frequently sampled and mixed by other groups and artists such as TLC, Black Star, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, and Color Me Badd. About.com ranks him 12th on its list of “The 50 Greatest MCs of Our Time (1987-2007)” and The Source magazine ranks him 15th on its list of “The 50 Greatest Lyricists of All Time”.
