About Sex Gang Children
Sex Gang Children were a British gothic rock band, formed in 1981 and disbanded in 1984. The name “Sex Gang Children” was taken from a short story by William Burroughs and was suggested by Malcolm McLaren as a possible name for the future band Bow Wow Wow.After a series of live performances, their first singles, “Beasts” and “Into the Abyss,” were released in 1982, while their debut album, “Song and Legend,” arrived in 1983 (which included the single “Sebastiane”). Song And Legend topped the independent charts in England. With a single of the calibre of “Sebastiane”, the feat is logical. Gypsy violins, to which cutting riffs respond, distil a bohemian atmosphere, while a bass purrs (that of Dave Roberts, also founder of the punkzine Kill Your Pet Puppet) and Andi Sex counterfeits an evil creature. When he coos “Sebastiane” before a huge wall of sound breaks through, between acoustic guitars and distortions, he turns the unfathomable darkness into a sexy object and a source of carnal tension.
Lightning-fast drum roll, guitars overflowing with energy, sometimes acoustic, a voice on helium, screaming, screaming, laughing, mimicking a little imp or the clown of a cursed circus (“The Crack Up”), it's furious and extremely captivating. The riffs hit the first try (funky “Shout And Scream” or the danceable “Killer “K”).
In the gothic world, Andi Sex is a prince. He struts around, gives himself entirely to the most licentious invocations, even if it means making a ton of them. With many hiccups, a bit like Siouxsie, he plays on androgyny, even on the definition of the human, because with his vocal roller coaster, he looks like a possessed person.
And his talent as a composer also allows him to play on atmospheres, sometimes soft (“Draconian Dream”, almost a ballad), sometimes taken by a hair-raising urgency (“Kill Machine”, punk). When it's on the same track, the trouble is even greater. There are thus sudden drops in tempo for more obscure passages, led by a superb bass, which often goes on its own, before a regular strafing (“German Nun”) is resumed.
Andi Sex doesn't want to impose his way of thinking, he just wants to awaken consciences with shocking images and sensations, he who hates sermons and sermons. As an accomplished artist, he accessorizes himself entirely to put himself at the service of his music. His body merges with the other chiseled instruments through vocal contortions and plastic gesticulations.
In the gothic theatre, Andi Sex is a colourful character whose longevity commands respect.
