About Super Heroines

Los Angeles, let's not forget, is above all a punk city. From 1978, clubs such as Whisky A Go-Go or The Masque opened their doors to local artists. In the audience, there are only young people who rush to the guitar shops at the exit. When Eva O (guitar and vocals), Sandra Ross (bass) and Del Mar Richardson (drums) get started, the trio naturally fits into this furious vein. Nothing is missing, the drums smashed like a vent, an abrasive guitar and a typical conciseness. You have to get straight to the point, shake by the collar and drop all the masks. “The Beast”, “Cry For Help” or “Blue Blood” are little bombs, with a retro side that goes well. We recognize a gentle madness that bands like X or The Runaways would not have denied.
The Californian band exudes a lot of energy, which looks like fury at first glance, but which reveals a rather prodigious defeatism when you think about it. Because the tone is serious. Some artifices do not deceive the band's intentions: to inspire a certain terror insidiously. The riff that looks like a fireman's siren, coupled with this low and typically deathrock guitar, on “Convicts”, is chilling, especially since Eva O adds to the witch's tremolos. The nasty riff of the instrumental “Super Heroine Theme” is reminiscent of heavy metal. And we find this heaviness at several other times. The rhythm is ultra fast, choppy, on “Remember To Die”, with a vociferous voice, before suddenly releasing for a welcome, albeit dark, decompression.
Eva O is a tormented woman. His confidence in humanity will continue to experience ups and downs. His group is a means of fighting against all forms of control and oppression. Later, Eva O joined Rozz Williams to form Shadow Project. Then he went solo. She became “Queen of Darkness”, an absolute icon of American deathrock. In the meantime, on this first album, already, his deep voice, Siouxsie-style, screams, harangues, bellows on “I'm Not Here” and its mournful choirs.
