About The Chameleons

The Chameleons (also known as The Chameleons UK in the United States) were a British post-punk band from Middleton, Greater Manchester, England. The band consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarist Reg Smithies, guitarist Dave Fielding, and drummer John Lever. They first broke up in 1987, after three albums, following the death of their manager Tony Fletcher, before reforming in 2000. They then recorded three more albums (two unplugged and one studio version), toured, and then broke up again. Drummer John Lever died in March 2017.
The Chameleons were formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, England, in 1981 by Burgess, Smithies, Fielding, and Schofield. After a few radio sessions with BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, the Chameleons signed with Epic Records and released their debut single, “In Shreds,” in 1982.
Their contract with Epic ended quickly, and the band signed with Statik Records, releasing their debut studio album, “Script of the Bridge”, in 1983. Their second and final album with Statik, “What Does Anything Mean? Basically”, was released in 1985. Following this, the Chameleons signed with Geffen Records, releasing a third studio album, “Strange Times”. After the sudden death of their manager, Tony Fletcher, the Chameleons disbanded.
The Chameleons returned in January 2000 to prepare for a UK tour, followed by a European tour. 2000 saw the release of the album Strip. After a final studio album, Why Call It Anything, another album, This Never Ending Now, and a reunion tour in Europe and the United States, the band broke up again in early 2003.
