How You Will Know

by Drora Matlofsky

This is how you will know that you are a poet:
Life will be extremely painful and extremely beautiful,
Everything will hurt and the pain will make you sing
And you will love the world and not understand why.

Life will be extremely painful and extremely beautiful,
Tears will forever be in your eyes
And you will love the world and not understand why,
But the world will not love you.

Tears will forever be in your eyes,
Blurring the lines and the colours,
But the world will not love you,
For no one will understand.

And the pain and the joy you must carry alone.
This is how you will know that you are a poet,
Always walking alone up untrodden paths.
Everything will hurt and the pain will make you sing.
