Father said that maybe
it was too much candy.
Mother said more likely
it was gooseberry jam.
Father said that maybe
with the sweet things handy
I forgot my gravy
and vegetables and ham.
Mother said that prob’ly
I had been too gob’ly.
Father nodded “probably”
and so did Gram.
But I said “Certainly,
it COULDN’T have been candy.
It must have been the gravy
and vegetables
and ham.”
