Both Sides Of The Fence

by Faith Elizabeth Brigham

his philosophy was
if a cop didn't see it-
he didn't do it
and that's where
his head was at the time

before prison he believed
in free love
shot up heroin
lived in roach infested flats
and danced like a hoodlum

he had a woman once
who left him while
he was still doing time
her parting words 'i must
be free' ring out in
the terror of the night
