just after 12

a whiff of sex
in the air

couples' cars
slide home up drives

clipped gardens
wait
between two days

fat girls
are whisked
off home through mist

& the suburb begins
to make love

pairs at first
then unison

houses streets
& gardens
the whole suburb

rocking in undulations
towards
one long collective
cry

then sleep

outside the gardens
recollect themselves

& wait it out
till dawn
