To A Metaphysical Amazon

by Josephine Miles

Josephine Miles

If you had world more durable to walk on,
Would your quick heels
Still earnestly construct a firmer pavement
Than any street reveals?

And still impatient of appearances
Would you deride
The soft earth with the loud reality
Of your hard stride?

Ours is a world intensely insecure,
Yet proud indeed
To have performed so long and patiently
Service not guaranteed.

Might you not then accept this modest ground
For its brief worth,
Tempering the sound of heels that can
Create a stronger earth?
