The Call to Carry the Cross

by Leighton Ainsworth

Religious

Christ gives the call to each and everyone
To take up their cross and "follow me"
Yet so many are half-hearted
And so carry their cross reluctantly
They consider it to heavy a burden
They fail to understand or care
That the cross Christ gives us to carry
Is a burden we simple must bare

Like many they follow from a distance
Because they refuse to come and draw near
But the call to carry the cross
Is one that is plain and clear
We make our excuses and complain
Failing to understand or care
That the cross Christ gives us to carry
Is a burden we simple must bare

We don't want to deny ourselves
Even though Christ was willing to die
We reject the call to carry our cross
Hoping the responsibility will pass us by
But there's no calvary without the cross
So why do fail to understand or care
That the cross Christ gives us to carry
Is a burden we simple must bare

We shun the command to carry our cross
That we may continue to live as we please
The cross has become a burden to us
Because we prefer a life of ease
But the command is not option
So why do fail to understand or care
That the cross Christ gives us to carry
Is a burden we simple must bare
