The Past Is Forever Present

by Pauletta Hansel

with us always
like the Biblical poor,
a hand outstretched
at every corner, begging
our memory's sweetmeat.
We keep our hands on the wheel,
our eyes on the road ahead.
What we most fear? Who
we could have been,
but for the one right turn,
or wrong.
Present is forever merging
into past, which never leaves us. Oh! Our
teeming, streaming
minds,
teeming, streaming
into past, which never leaves us. Oh, our
present is forever merging,
or wrong,
But for the one right turn,
we could have been
what we most fear. Who.
Our eyes on the road ahead,
we keep our hands on the wheel.
Our memory's sweetmeat
at every corner, begging,
a hand outstretched
like the Biblical poor.
with us always.
