A Remarkable Story

by Ralph Bergengren

Chapter I

A brave Turkish soldier went off to the
war
With his cimeter polished and ready,
A musket as long as a merchantman's
spar,
And nerves quite uncommonly steady.

Chapter II

A fair Turkish maid in the village was
left
And to Allah she prayed all she knew,
He should see she was not of her true
love bereft,
Which was certainly easy to do.

Chapter IIL-X

A bad Turkish villain must not be left
out,
Whose heart with the maiden was
smitten;
To tell how he followed the maiden
about,
Six chapters at least should be written.

Chapter X

Now this is a story with neither a plot
Nor a purpose (which everyone fears),
As a matter of fact the brave soldier
was shot
And the maiden was left to her tears,
And as for the villain, he found that it
paid
To become a good Christian and go into
trade.
