Midas, the Philosopher

by Diane Fahey

Diane Fahey

Although, or because,
he once wore ass's ears,
Midas cannot see why,
as Heraclitus noted,
donkeys prefer rubbish
to gold … He thinks
the world's composed
of gold, not fire,
and reasons: if all things
originate from gold,
all things must be
reversible to gold —
a thesis he can prove
at will, without need
of further argument.
Currently, in his circle
at least, this view
is taken as irrefutable.
