Moon beams in January

by James Piehl

I did not like much
when I slept on the couch
in those days

The house was so vacant then

The clock would remind me
every hour
I lay awake in the dark
with the cold glow
of the moon
filtering through the lifeless,
leafless branches outside
the giant picture window
and settling gently
on the loveseat
and floor

Illuminating the empty house
with me on the couch
