About Aracelis GirmayAracelis Girmay is an African-American poet. She published her first collection of poetry Teeth in 2007, for which she won the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. In 2011, She published Kingdom Animalia, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and winner of the Isabella Poetry. Her third book The Black Maria was published in 2016 which was named one of the best books of the year by the Boston Globe. She was also the 2015 winner, of the Whiting Award for poetry.
She has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Civitella Ranieri, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Girmay is currently the Editor-at-Large for BOA Editions' Blessing the Boats Selections, and she is on the editorial board of the African Poetry Book Fund.
