About David Ignatow

David Ignatow (February 7, 1914 – November 17, 1997) was a notable American poet and editor. He served as the president of the Poetry Society of America from 1980 to 1984 and held the position of poet-in-residence at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association in 1987. Among Ignatow's numerous awards are a Bollingen Prize, two Guggenheim fellowships, the John Steinbeck Award, and a National Institute of Arts and Letters award recognizing his lifetime of creative works. He was also the recipient of the Shelley Memorial Award (1966), the Frost Medal (1992), and the William Carlos Williams Award (1997) from the Poetry Society of America. In addition to his writing, Ignatow worked as an editor for various publications, including the American Poetry Review and the Beloit Poetry Journal, and served as the poetry editor for The Nation. David Ignatow wrote and published more than 25 poetry and prose books, with notable works such as Living is What I Wanted: Last Poems (BOA Editions, 1999).
