About Ishmael Reed
Ishmael Reed (born Ishmael Scott Reed on February 22, 1938) is an American poet, novelist, essayist, songwriter, playwright, editor, and publisher. A figure of the New York and Californian underground in the 1960s and 1970s, heir to the Harlem Renaissance hailed as an “immense writer” by James Baldwin, he is the author of numerous novels, essays, short stories and poems. Reed is known for his satirical works challenging American political culture and highlighting political and cultural oppression. He is an award-winning scholar in all categories. Mr. Reed taught at the University of California, Berkeley, for 35 years, as well as at Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth. Ishmael Reed is a member of Harvard's Signet Society and Yale's Calhoun Society.
