About Assata Shakur
Assata Shakur, born July 16, 1947 in Jamaica, Queens (New York) and died September 25, 2025 in Havana (Cuba), under the name of JoAnne Deborah Byron, wife Chesimard, is an African-American political activist, member of the Black Panther Party (BPP) and the Black Liberation Army (BLA). Sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a police officer during a shootout, she escaped in 1979 and obtained political asylum in Cuba. Assata Shakur is the sister of Mutulu Shakur (father of Tupac Shakur and stepfather of Mopreme Shakur, hip-hop singers), and her life is chronicled in several works of literature, film and music.Browse all poems and texts published on Assata Shakur
