About Jennifer Chang
Jennifer Chang is an American poet and scholar. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1998, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Virginia in 2002. She then returned there to pursue a Ph.D., which she earned in 2017.Her poems have appeared in The American Poetry Review, The Best American Poetry 2012, The Nation, The New Yorker, Poetry, and A Public Space. Chang’s first poetry collection, The History of Anonymity, was published in 2008 by the University of Georgia Press. Her second book, Some Say the Lark, was published by Alice James Books in 2017. It was shortlisted for the 2018 PEN Open Book Award and won the 2018 William Carlos Williams Award. Chang’s third poetry collection, An Authentic Life, published by Copper Canyon Press in 2024, was a finalist for both the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

She frequently uses elements such as forests, fields, and rivers as mirrors of the quest for self and the origin of consciousness; identity and the diaspora as a profound reflection on her experience as a daughter of immigrants, as a mother, and as an American citizen; and also historical consciousness and violence, where she questions figures of authority (such as the “fathers” of history, literature, and philosophy) and the impact of war and patriarchy on domestic life. Her style of writing is borrowed from a lyrical and meditative voice: poems that are both lucid and full of urgency that refuse easy answers in favor of suspension and questioning. In her poems, the shifts from self to world are a subtle play on pronouns and perspective, linking intimate gestures to great collective upheavals; in all her writings, she refuses an overly linear self-narrative and privileges instead an elliptical and atmospheric approach.
