Richard Hugo, born December 21, 1923 in White Center, Washington, and died in Seattle on October 22, 1982, was an American poet and one of the pioneers of the Montana Writers group. His first collection of poems, A Run of Jacks, was published in 1961. Shortly after, he began teaching at the University of Montana. His students included James Welch, James Crumley, and William Kittredge. He went on to publish five more collections of poetry, an autobiographical work (The Real West Marginal Way), and a mystery novel, Death and the Good Life; this work narrowly missed the Pulitzer Prize. He died of leukemia on October 22, 1982.
