About Alice Notley

Alice Notley, (born November 8, 1945, in Bisbee, Arizona—died May 19, 2025, in Paris), was an American poet, playwright, and art critic. She was one of the leading figures of the “New York School” movement, which centered around the Poetry Project. She was the wife of poet Ted Berrigan, with whom she had two sons. In 1999, Notley was both a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry. In spring 2001, she received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Poetry Society of America's Shelley Memorial Award.
Alice Notley was inspired by the work of William Carlos Williams, of whom she considered herself an heir. Her poetry expresses with humor and finesse the nuances and subtleties of interpersonal relationships rather than emphasizing her own emotional independence as an emancipated woman, in the manner of her New York contemporaries Anne Waldman and Diane Wakoski. She was also inspired by the work of Gertrude Stein.
